This course introduces to the emerging field of multispecies ethnography that foregrounds human entanglements with other beings, such as animals, plants, insects, fungi and microbes. It explores recent avenues of research and writing opened up by multispecies approaches, such as more-than-human agencies, interspecies intimacies (love, hate, disgust etc.), and a range of other current concerns (i.e. the role of animals in the food system, climate change and species extinction). Students will gain a solid grasp of the theoretical moves implied in the turn to more-than-human anthropology and will familiarize themselves with recent multispecies ethnographies. They will also participate in experiments in multispecies ethnography at the Botanical Gardens in Dahlem. This will enable reflecting on how we draw boundaries between “us” and “them” and how thinking alongside other beings challenges us to rethink what we mean by “human”.
