In this seminar, we will examine historical and current colonial and/or ethnocentric tendencies within the discipline of sociology. We will, first of all critically engage with the sociological canon – the corpus of texts written by those who are deemed key scholars in the discipline. We will look at how the canon has been constructed, on what grounds, what is missing, and why – paying particular attention to the exclusion of African American sociologists. Secondly, we will interrogate how coloniality and/or ethnocentrism has structured and continues to structure sociological theory and practice. The entire seminar will be taught remotely via Webex. close
