WiSe 20/21: Globalization and Cultural Sociology: Theories, concepts, topics

Sebastian Büttner

Comments

Processes of transnationalization and globalization pose new challenges and questions for sociological reflection. Increasing interrelation and connectedness of society across national borders force sociologists to rethink basic concepts of sociology and established analytical frameworks. In this MA seminar we will discuss globalization and transnationalization especially from the perspective of cultural sociology. Hence, we will discuss major theories, concepts, and approaches of cultural sociology and assess how we can use them for an analysis of current societal trends and transformations. It is the aim of the seminar to provide a general overview of major debates and reflections on the cultural implications of transnationalization and globalization and stimulate reflections about major cultural trends in contemporary Europe and beyond. In this context, we will not only talk about sociological issues, but we will also touch upon reflections in neighbouring disciplines, such as global history, cultural anthropology, geography, or postcolonial studies. close
