WiSe 20/21: (HS) The Rabbinic Midrashim on Song of Songs

Tal Ilan

Comments

The Song of Songs - a poetic love song between a woman and a man - is an unusual book to find in a collection of holy writings. It is for this reason that it has been interpreted from the very beginning as an allegory about the love between Israel and God. This interpretation is found in a number of rabbinic texts, most of the from the Land of Israel, but some of them also from the Babylonian Talmud. It is interesting also to compare this allegorical interpretation with the allegorical interpretation of contemporary Christian church fathers to the same book close
