WiSe 20/21: Inscriptions and History in Ancient Iran

For much of ancient Iranian history, inscriptions commissioned by rulers and high-ranking individuals constitute the most important primary sources available to historians. However, the information contained within the inscriptions is often fragmentary, ambiguous or distorted for propaganda purposes. Using the inscriptions to reconstruct ancient Iranian history is a challenge with many pitfalls. In this seminar, selected inscriptions from the Achaemenian, Arsacid, Kushan and Sasanian Empires will be read and analyzed and the problems they pose as historical sources will be discussed. The inscriptions will be read in translation, no special knowledge of Iranian languages is required.
