WiSe 20/21: Theories of recognition: a critical introduction
Pedro Teixeira
Comments
In this seminar we will address the topic of recognition. Taking Hegel as a starting point for our theoretical analysis, we will then focus on some of the most important recent contributions to this topic, which in different ways share a hegelian heritage (F. Fanon, C. Taylor, A. Honneth). We will explore how the question of recognition influences discussions about multiculturalism (W. Kymlicka, K. A. Appiah), redistribution (N. Fraser), national identity (D. Miller) and politics of difference (I. M. Young, A. Philips). While we go over these theoretical contributions, we will also discuss how current and past political and social events help us shape our understanding of social recognition and the practical implications of such struggles. close
