WiSe 20/21: (Ü) Body and Gender/Sexuality in East Asia

Eun-Jeung Lee

Comments

This course invites students to the transnational understanding about issues on the body in East Asia through the lens of gender/sexuality lens. Since the 1960s, critical theories and movements including feminism, have scrutinized and developed frameworks on the human body which locates on the boundaries among the structured, agency, material and changeable. Foucault’s biopower, Butler’s troubled body and Haraway’s cyborg are a few examples. In this seminar, we are going to attempt to link between critical concepts with current issues of the body such as “comfort women”, reproductive rights, diet and plastic surgery, sexual minorities’ rights, and #metoo movement in East Asia. However, this attempt is not so much as an application of theory as a translation of theory. It is expected to result in a productive revision of the theory and novel perspective on particular issues. close
