WiSe 20/21: PS-Introduction to Linguistics II
Alexander Rauhut
Comments
The scientific study of language is essential for our endeavour to understand communication, human psychology, social interaction, and language teaching. This course offers an introduction to the basic concepts and methods of linguistics and will enable you to carry out your first linguistic analyses.
There will be an overview of the most important concepts and characteristic phenomena on various levels of analysis (phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics). These will be demonstrated with examples from English as the primary object of investigation, with occasional glances at other languages. The course will provide an outlook on current methods and tools used for linguistic analysis.
In the end, students will be able to understand the language of linguistics and pursue further studies in the discipline. The seminar is complemented by an obligatory lecture course: Introduction to English Linguistics I: Survey of Language and Linguistics (Mo, 14:00–16:00) by Prof. Anatol Stefanowitsch. You are going to finish with an exam covering the whole module (seminar & lecture).
This seminar will be offered online. There will be live classes during the given time slot with obligatory participation. You will receive information and complementary video materials via email and a course blog. Please check your university email regularly and contact me if there are technical problems or questions.
