WiSe 20/21: Studying the Middle East (methodology course)
Konrad Hirschler; Lukas Mühlethaler
Comments
This course familiarizes participants with the diversity and interrelatedness of scholarly approaches in disciplines from the field of Interdisciplinary Studies of the Middle East. It makes participants aware of the intercultural and epistemological challenges to scholarly research on history, societies, cultures of text, cultures of knowledge, languages, and literature in that region. The course provides the participants with tools to assess research literature critically and with techniques to formulate complex research questions. Participants will also gain experience with presenting the results of their own research and analyses coherently and comprehensibly both in writing or orally.
The first part of the course (until the winter break) is dedicated to research and writing skills. In the second part of the course, participants use these skills to analyse the case study readings of the lecture course for the approaches and methods used and explore how they can incorporate these into their own research and writing.
