WiSe 20/21: An Introduction to Populism in the United States

This course examines populist struggles in the United States from the age of Jackson to the present. Focusing on critical interpretations of primary sources written, spoken, and performed by historical subjects, we will examine key figures and movements, both progressive and reactionary, as they labor to define ‘the true people’. This course is particularly attentive to the paradox of mass politics, and the role of ‘othering’ in the American experience. Major themes include historical method and the political uses of the past; protestant nativism; the promise and tragedy of black populism; populism and race; the progressive movement; conservative populism; sex, identity and the politics of cultural backlash and; the crisis of liberal democracy. Our class meetings will consist of student presentations, discussion, viewing, listening, and reflection. close
