WiSe 20/21: The International Investment Regime: Perspectives from International Political Economy

The course examines the politics of the international investment regime in the global economy. It will provide an introduction to the evolution of the rules on investment in the 21st century and its relation to ideas underlying international trade, with perspectives from the Global South. The different frameworks at national, bilateral and multilateral levels, key scholarly debates in the field as well as the various national and transnational actors which play a prominent role in the international investment landscape will be discussed. Finally, it will offer students case-level insights into debates on the impacts of these frameworks and instruments, for instance, the relevance of investment agreements for human rights in developing countries along with a discussion of policy implications. close
