This course will introduce students to the role of science and technology within transatlantic relations. In terms of the historical periods covered in this class, the course will focus on the Cold War era (1945-1990) and the recent past (1990-2021). Themes we will address in class will include the history of science diplomacy, technology, research & development, renewable energy and university diplomacy (e.g. Freie Universität Berlin as an international actor). In addition, we will explore the role of science and technology within U.S./European relations towards the ‘global South’, including a hands-on working project on science and humanitarianism. Please note that this course also includes a virtual four-week cooperation with a class of Dominique Marshall at Carleton University in Ottawa. Meeting times for this cooperation will be Mondays 14:30 - 17:30 on November 15, 22, 29 and December 6. Schließen
