Hinweise für Studierende

"Since I expect many students to make use of the „course shopping week“, there will certainly be more students participating in the first session. In order to give everyone a chance to get to know the course, the first session will take place in two rounds: Round 1: 10:15h - 11:00h: Last names beginning with letters A-M; Round 2: 11:00h - 11:45h: Last names beginning with letters N-Z. ----- After that, sessions will continue in the regular order of business" Schließen

Sociological inquiry is a diverse and complex field, as much as the society it seeks to analyze and understand. Accordingly, this course aims at providing a first introduction to the fundamentals of US sociology with its theories and methods. In order to contextualize this admittedly broad field, the central theme of the course will be human sexuality. The sociology of human sexuality is particularly useful, because it is located at the intersection of gender, race, and class, and can be reviewed from many perspectives in relation to the functions it might have in society and its ambivalent impact on groups and individuals alike. Moreover, studies of sexuality are inherently connected to ethical questions concerning social science research which will also be addressed throughout the course. Last but not least, students will have the opportunity to practice what it means to write a sociological paper. Everyone is encouraged to bring their research questions, ideas, and concerns to the table, because sociology also means learning from one another and engaging in meaningful exchange. Accordingly, and in order to account for difficulties connected to the ongoing pandemic, students will be able to choose from a variety of examination requirements including a take-home exam, essays, and a research paper.
