One of the central challenges of modern societies are social inequalities. Empirically based knowledge about the extent, the causes and the consequences of social inequalities in a society is the prerequisite not only for their moral evaluation, but especially for deciding which inequalities should be curbed and by which means. In this seminar, current sociological approaches and concepts for describing and explaining social inequalities will be discussed. The focus is on theoretical models that claim to be empirically testable and that belong to the tradition of analytical sociology.
