Transnational and interdisciplinary perspectives on the notions of living together, social cohesion, belonging and community have been particularly relevant in the current context of growing inequalities, increasing social and cultural pluralization and political polarization, as well as regarding the tendencies to fortify national boundaries via exclusive hegemonic politics or enhanced borders. Accordingly, this conjunction of factors has recently led to a revival of political and theoretical debates on living together in contemporary societies. At the theoretical level, new critical approaches have argued that the major sociological concept “social cohesion” has an anthropocentric and Eurocentric genealogy disregarding interdependences between human and non-human living beings as well as conceptual developments found in different world regions. Politically, indigenous and minoritarian repertoires of living together (e.g.: buen vivir, Ubuntu, comunalidad) have become more and more visible, inspiring encompassing transformative movements. Drawing upon these global interdependencies, this research-based course concentrates on the intellectual practices of “living together” in its social, philosophical and political aspects. This will be our starting point to explore how social actors or movements imagine and practice communal life and create bonds. Starting from two joint projects (see Mecila, RePLITO), to which the course instructors currently contribute, this research placement will include both a study of recent conceptual developments and an empirical exploratory research of different repertoires of living together from different world regions, based on qualitative methods (interviews, archival research, explorative digital ethnographies).
