WiSe 21/22: Dramaturgy

Since the 1990s and early 2000s, the notion of dramaturgy underwent significant changes; from the idea of „new dramaturgy as a process oriented method” (Lehmann), to a more ambivalent definition, provided by practitioners-dramaturges (Kerkhoven, 1994, Cvejic, 2014). As a discipline, dramaturgy remains somehow ungraspable, both in the context of academia, as well as in practice. Paradoxically, it seems that the ambiguity of its definition has led to the proliferation of dramaturges in the field where they occupy various positions in institutions. These positions often include a spectrum of different activities, such as feed-backing, hosting, mentoring, co-creating, producing, mediating, take care, teaching etc.
In the frame of the exercises, different approaches to dramaturgy will be contextualized and the multiplicity of the figure of the dramaturg will be re-examined. Which tendencies and working conditions have led to understanding the role of the dramaturg as a multifunctional co-worker? What procedures and strategies are being used when practicing dramaturgy? And how are these procedures visible in different presentation formats?
The exercises will consist of reading recent theoretical texts on dramaturgy, as well as analysing works from the independent dance scene through discussions and short writing tasks. The exercises will be taught in English, with the option for students to use German in writing and during discussions.
