This seminar has two main objectives: (1) to introduce students to the literature on political participation and (2) to provide students with methodological tools to carry quantitative analysis on this topic. In terms of theory, we will discuss the concept of political participation (focusing on the distinction between different types of participation), examine individual and contextual determinants of political activism, and explore recent debates such as the potential decline in political involvement in established democracies and shifting inequalities in political participation. In terms of methods, the seminar will provide an introduction to the free statistical software R and present relevant quantitative methods to examine patterns of political participation. We will briefly review basic notions of statistical inference and linear regression before moving on to more advanced topics such as logistic regression, factor analysis, and longitudinal and multilevel modeling. The seminar will rely on data from large survey projects and voter turnout databases. Prior knowledge of elementary statistics would be helpful, but is not required. Thorough reading and regular exercises are essential to keep up with the material presented in the seminar. Schließen
