The lecture course uses questions and methods from the history of knowledge ("Wissensgeschichte") for an introduction to various traditions of Jewish knowledge. Using examples from antiquity to the present, we examine forms and contents of knowledge, how knowledge is produced and accumulated, who serves as carriers of knowledge, the various social contexts of knowledge, how knowledge is communicated and disseminated, and how knowledge is applied. We will not be treating "Jewish knowledge" as a fixed category. Instead, we will try to understand the processes through which contents and forms of knowledge are considered and accepted as "Jewish". Thus, the lecture course both serves as an introduction to various traditions of Jewish knowledge and questions the parameters which have made their constitution as traditions of Jewish knowledge possible. If Covid-19 restrictions in place mid-October allow for it, participants from Berlin will meet in-person for the first session in the room indicated. Please get up-to-date information from Blackboard or write the instructor. Schließen
