WiSe 21/22: Development of the American Economy - Case Studies

This course will cover the economic history of the United States, from colonial times to the 1960s. Topics to be covered will include the colonial economy, the economics of the American Revolution, the transportation revolution, the industrial revolution, the role of agriculture, the economics of the pre and post-Civil War American South, the rise of big business, the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression, the New Deal, wartime production, African American socioeconomic progress, postwar economic growth, immigration, trade and economic inequality. For active participation: regular attendance of lectures and seminar presentations. All students are required to present one of the different seminar papers or to summarize an assigned chapter. Presentations should be 20 minutes long and outline the content of the article/topic to be discussed. In cases of research papers, this includes identifying the research question, methodology, and findings. Presenters should be prepared to answer questions related to the reading. For a grade: written final examination. The final exam will cover all topics discussed in class. Please register early, as there are only limited places available. Once you have been accepted to the seminar on Tuesdays you will be added to this seminar shortly after the registration period ends. Attendance at the first session on Tuesday is mandatory.
