This MA level seminar on the history of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has three objectives: 1) It will offer students an understanding of the different stages and facets of Saudi history from the founding of the kingdom to the present. 2) Students will be introduced to the latest academic contributions that are transforming the study of the region. 3) The various learning materials and guest speakers will introduce students to fieldwork research methods and to the combined and integrated knowledge of history, politics, religion, gender, and urban studies. The course is aimed at both MA students of Arab and Islamic Studies and students of the Global History program.
The students of the Arab and Islamic Studies program will take part in the “Übung” (source readings) which will offer additional selected material in Arabic that will introduce them to primary sources in the form of religious treatises, political documents, and literary works. At the end of the course, the students will achieve a solid understanding of the most representative scholarly literature in the study of Saudi Arabia, of several fieldwork approaches, and of methods of analyzing primary sources.
