The United States have developed into a predominantly urban nation over the last 150 years. Many social problems in its history have been particularly urban and American sociology started out as a sociology of mainly urban issues. This seminar traces the history of urbanization in the US through the lens of a number of different urban themes such as housing, suburbs, race, riots, policing, politics, gender and others. The seminar implicitly contains a comparative dimension by juxtaposing some unique features of American with European cities. Students should be prepared to read at least one entire book in the seminar and be open to empirical work on cities, including city datasets and possibly GIS. Schließen
