This BA course will be held on campus (Präsenzlehre). In this class, we will analyze Canada’s international policies. This will include Canada’s diplomatic efforts, its defence and security policy, Ottawa’s international trade policy as well as development assistance programs. After a brief overview of the history of Canada’s external relations – starting with the emancipation from British rule and the country’s participation in World Wars I and II – the seminar will primarily focus on the period after the Cold War. We will examine the role of the Prime Minister, the respective ministries and the House of Commons in fashioning Ottawa’s stance in the world. The course will also feature case studies to highlight particular aspects of Canada’s international policies. Throughout the semester, groups will work on a briefing note to the Canadian Prime Minister. Briefing notes will be presented as part of a simulation in the final session. I also plan a virtual meeting with Canadian officials currently deployed across the globe. Please get in touch with me before the first session if attending the course physically is not possible for you (or not preferred). We will then try to find a way to allow you to attend the course virtually Schließen
