WiSe 21/22: Rituals and Performance in U.S. History
Sebastian Jobs
Kommentar
Rituals and performances have played an important role in creating and changing the American political and cultural fabric. The inauguration of presidents, independence-day parades, or sit-ins - they did not merely reflect existing structures and concepts, but they created meaning in the moment of execution. They were means to deal with social change and crisis. In this class we will analyze the role of performances and rituals in U.S. History from the Early Republic to the late twentieth century - discussing aesthetic and rhetorical norms as well as the historical impact individual events had.
