The structures and dynamics of social inequality are embedded in a progressively globalized world. Yet, until recently, most studies have focused on the EU and Anglo-Saxon countries. In this seminar, we will examine the causes and consequences of social inequalities for individuals’ lives in OECD and non-OECD countries and also from a cross-country perspective. In particular, we will explore whether the mechanisms of social inequalities follow similar patterns across the world, and how both within- and between-country inequalities ultimately shape global inequality with its multiple winners and losers.
Participants will get acquainted with key concepts, theories, and quantitative methodological approaches. We will pay specific attention to quantitative research on inequalities in education and labor markets. This seminar will be dedicated to in-depth discussions of the week’s readings, including the statistical analyses to improve students’ scholarly and methodological skills and their understanding of different conceptualizations of social inequality. Thus, it is essential that the readings are completed and thoroughly read before each session. For the final paper, students will be asked to design a research project on a topic in the field of social inequality.
