Chinese ideas about the legitimacy of the state, the nature of political action, and the immediate and ultimate goals of life have undergone fundamental transformations since the late seventeenth century. A disparate group of individual thinkers—buffeted by political chaos, imperialism, and the tides of revolution—examined and re-examined a wide range of Chinese and Western conceptions. The purpose of this course is to introduce the development of Chinese thought from late Ming in the 17th Century to Mid-Twentieth century.
The major goals of this course are for students to gain familiarity with the rich sets of conceptions that have shaped modern Chinese history; to learn the skills necessary to analyze historical texts; and to gain an appreciation for Chinese intellectuals’ quests to reform and reconstruct the political system, seek social justice, and improve the nation and the world.
This course emphasizes student participation and discussion, based on the reading of secondary and primary sources (in English). Grading is based on: participation, two short papers (4-6 pages), and a final paper (15 pages, optional, deadline: March 15, 2022).
