WiSe 21/22: Authoritarianism in Eurasia: Domestic and International Dimensions
Alexander Libman
Comments
While traditionally political science focuses on studying democratic regimes, recent decades have experienced a surge in research on authoritarianism. The class will cover the modern scholarship on authoritarian regimes, in particular concentrating on three aspects. First, we will discuss the definition of authoritarian regimes and their varieties. Second, we will address the tools of power preservation in authoritarian regimes - in particular, repressions, political institutions and propaganda. Third, we will continue with introducing the foreign policy dimension of authoritarianism and look at how authoritarian regimes collaborate in international relations and whether they promote authoritarian mode of governance abroad. Empirically, we will pay foremost attention to the post-Soviet era, studying authoritarian regimes in countries like Russia, Belarus or Kazakhstan; however, the class aims to use a genuinely comparative perspective, discussing similarities and difference between the Eurasian regionalism and regionalism in other parts of the world. close
