Multilateral organisations have recently faced growing challenges. Member states are leaving international organisations, governments are cutting their financial support or blocking replacements, and non-state actors are also organising protests and campaigns against these institutions. In this seminar, we will look at recent research on legitimacy and legitimacy crises of international organisations in three steps. First, we will examine the foundations and principles of legitimacy beyond the nation state and get a picture of the empirical state of research on different organisations. In a second step, we will look at the causes of the growing importance of legitimacy issues on the basis of contributions from research on the politicisation of regional and global governance structures. In the third part of this seminar, we will deal with theoretical and empirical research on protest, opposition and resistance to international organisations: who are the opponents of these institutions and what are their motives? Since when, why and with what consequences do both states and non-state actors oppose certain forms of cooperation in multilateral institutions? close
