WiSe 21/22: Post-colonial Studies and Anti-colonial Struggles in the MENA region

The mass uprisings in the Middle East and North African (MENA) region since 2010 constitute the most significant popular protests since the anti-colonial struggles in the 1950s and 1960s. Different political imaginaries and ideologies based on those different temporalities have an impact on the political practices and imaginaries of the mass movements. This course addresses the debates, political practices and imaginaries of the anti-colonial movements and traces its aftermath in the current revolutionary uprisings. The course will be divided into two parts. The first part will investigate important concepts and theoretical debates such as nationalism, resistance, and subjectivity of the independence movements. The second part will focus on certain cases to compare some of the anti-colonial struggles with today’s mass uprisings. The course aims to advance a deep understanding of the MENA region and the recent uprisings by situating those struggles within their colonial histories, the forming of the postcolonial states and compare those to the current movements during postcolonial times. During the course we will thus inquire into anti-colonial movements, the central role of nationalism during the struggles and the political practices that developed henceforth and compare those to the recent uprisings during postcolonial, neoliberal times, the changed role of the state and political practices, that feature horizontal forms of organization and the centrality of the question of democracy. close
