European societies are facing radical challenges, from the political instability, health crisis, climate change, demographic change, to the fast-paced technological innovations. Particularly the global megatrends like digitalization and population ageing will define the functioning of European societies in the coming decades. This seminar will address those questions and challenges which lie at the intersection of these two megatrends with a particular focus on such issues as: digital divide, intergenerational relations, ageism in tech industry, age discrimination in the access to products and services, age bias in artificial intelligence, algorithmic awareness, longevity revolution and the role of technology, smart technologies for ageing population, Internet of Things solutions and datafication of old age. The seminar will draw on most recent empirical research and theoretical developments in the area of sociology of ageing, STS studies, gerontology and critical algorithm studies. Furthermore, we will look at national and European policies regulating development of digital technology, and especially those relating to ethical aspects of use of artificial intelligence. close
