WiSe 21/22: Gender and Foreign Policy

The course will examine the role of gender in foreign policy by unpicking two distinct but interrelated frameworks of women, peace and security (WPS) and a feminist foreign policy. It will examine the meaning of WPS in the context of the Security Council Resolution (S/RES/1325) and shed light on its conceptual overlaps and differences with concurrent discourse(s) on feminist foreign policy. It will engage with key debates through a lens of intersectionality, including post-colonial critiques of these frameworks, their relevance to the Global South, and will consider their implications for the theory and practice of foreign policy, including on migration, trade, defense and humanitarian aid close
