WiSe 21/22: Beyond Neoliberal Feminism: The Resurgence of Social Reproduction Theory

Markus Kienscherf

Information for students

Hybrid course, starts as in-person teaching transmitted online; if the need arises it will go online completely. Even though this class will be taught in a hybrid format (both in-person and via Webex), I would prefer as many students as possible to participate in-person. If need be, I will revert back to a virtual format (via Webex). close

Comments

Women’s labor force participation rate is conventionally viewed as one the most important yardsticks for measuring gender equality. Yet, working women still shoulder most of the house- or care work (or farm it out to other women). Indeed, what Ehrenreich and Hochschild called women’s double shift has come into stark relief during the current Covid-19 pandemic. In this seminar, we will examine what a particular strand of feminist theorizing – social reproduction theory – can contribute to our understanding of the double shift, the crisis of care (or social reproduction, more generally), a gendered division of labor and feminist politics. To this end, we will map the development of social reproduction theory from its origins in the 1970s Wages for Housework campaign to its contemporary resurgence. close
