WiSe 21/22: (METH) Banks and banking in global politics
Andrea Binder
Comments
Banks and states share the power to create money. This shared power sets banks apart both from state actors and from non-state actors, such as
multinational corporations or NGOs. Nevertheless, banks or more broadly financial institutions, are not theorised as international actors in their own right in
either International Relations or in International Political Economy. For a long time these disciplines have not even been studied. Interest in banks and
banking has surged with the global financial crisis of 2007-08. The seminar explores what we know and still need to learn about how banks and banking
shape global politics. From the perspective of both banking in the Global North and the Global South, the seminar traces historically how banking has
changed from the establishment of the Bretton Woods System to today. It focuses on individual commercial banks, the deepening interdependence
between central banks, the rise of non-bank financial institutions, and digital currencies. close
