The aim of this course is to survey recent developments in contemporary Scottish fiction, and poetry. After a short introduction to the history of Scottish literature and a brief look at recent socio-cultural, political developments, we shall read works by contemporary Scottish authors, including short stories by Janice Galloway and novels by James Robertson (And the Land Lay Still [2010]) and Ali Smith (How to Be Both[2014]). We shall also discuss recent poetry by Jenni Fagan and John Burnside; depending on the students’ specific interests, alternatively we could also look at Scottish drama, for instance, Louise Welsh’s Tamburlaine Must Die (2004). Students are encouraged to read How to Be Both by the beginning of the semester.
