Wolfram Keller
Comments
This course aims to familiarize students with the fiction and poetry of the Canadian writer Margaret Atwood. One focus of the seminar will be on Atwood’s adaptations and rewritings, such as her Penelopiad (2005), a rewriting of Homer’s Odyssey from Penelope’s perspective, and Hag-Seed (2016), an adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Moreover, we shall discuss Atwood’s representation of history and of the future in The Handmaid’s Tale (1985) and Oryx and Crake (2003). Toward the end of the semester, we shall also look at adaptations of Atwood’s work, especially the television adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale.
