Lecture
WiSe 21/22: V-Lit. Stud.: Periods-Genres-Concepts: English Poetry: Systematics
Andreas Mahler
Comments
Poetry is the elusive genre, if genre it is. If narratives and drama can be distinguished from each other by the Aristotelian criterion of speech, poetry always seems to look like an awkward third that cannot be integrated systematically into the picture. The lecture, which is offered in combination with the seminar on “Analyzing poetry” but can be taken independently, attempts to explore the systematic aspects of what throughout the times and in different cultures has been termed ‘poetry’, trying to attribute to it typical features and recurrent constitutive elements.
