In this course, we will discuss and analyse different ways of creating and maintaining kinship. We will particularly focus on assisted reproductive technologies, but will also talk about topics such as adoption and other forms of socially created kinship and relatedness. Key questions will be: how is kinship created? What are the differences between and similarities of different forms of kinship, e.g. genetic, biological, social? Which kinds of relationships can be understood as family and kinship? And are the so-called ‘new’ reproductive technologies really so new? Does the understanding of kinship differ between different cultures? The answers to these questions will shed light on the many different forms kinship can take, especially beyond ‘traditional’ heteronormative Euro-American models. close
