This course is intended to provide an introduction to video and film practices within the field of contemporary art, covering the period of the 1960s into the 1990s. We shall discuss, first of all, the filmic turn of contemporary art in the later 1960s and 1970s in relation not only to the categories of minimal, conceptual and performance art, but also to more established categories of avant-garde film and expanded cinema, which to a certain extent intersect with the field of the visual arts. Secondly, we shall address the introduction of video equipment into the visual arts and its interrelation with the medium of television as well as political activism. Finally, we shall consider the reintroduction of film and video installations in the 1990s due, among other factors, to the digital revolution. A central resource in this course will be the famous video archive of Electronic Arts Intermix (New York), which has become available to FU students through the KHI library. If circumstances allow, we shall also make use of the video collection of the Neue Berliner Kunstverein. close
