WiSe 21/22: Literary Themes in East Asian Art

Comments
This seminar introduces selected paradigmatic motifs and themes in East Asian visual culture, with focus on the medium of painting and topoi stemming from Chinese literary classics from the 2nd to the 12th century. Topics to be handled include, among others, “the Xiao and Xiang rivers”, “Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove”, “Peach Blossom Spring”, “Returning Home”, “Red Cliff”, and pictorial representations of Tang poetry. Exemplary works from China, Japan and Korea will be discussed. Participants of the seminar are expected to learn and obtain a thorough understanding of the literary works and cultural images (with the aid of translation), before going into detailed visual and contextual analysis of the pictorial representations. close
