Legal requirements within different state systems, the size of advertising markets or public funding for the media, but also cultural factors have an impact on how media companies are structured and what resources they have at their disposal – which in turn is reflected in their content. In other words, political, economic, and cultural structures have an impact on media performance. But how can these relationships be analysed and explained?
This seminar deals with this question by offering an introduction to comparative media structure research. By reading the relevant scientific literature about media structure we will considering how its core ideas can be implemented in empirical research designs. Since the research of media structures is often based on international comparison, we are going to look into the methodology of comparative research as well.
