In this research placement (RP), we will focus on methods for causal inference in the social sciences. We discuss designs and methods for (quasi-) experiments and observational studies using the potential outcome approach. Following the principle "design trumps analysis", the course emphasizes the assumptions of causality and the resulting implications for the design of studies. In particular, designs and methods covered include randomization, matching, instrumental variables, difference-in-difference, and regression discontinuity. Students will deepen their knowledge of each analytical strategy with practical applications with STATA or R.
The primary goal of this RP is to enable students to carry out their own research project within the class applying research designs for causal inference. The aims of this RP are: to understand the challenges of causality in the social sciences, to learn statistical methods for causal inference; to conduct own analysis with own research questions, and to interpret and present own statistical results. Please note: Basic knowledge of applied statistics and of STATA or R is a prerequisite for participation and indispensable for the successful completion of the course. close
