WiSe 21/22: Affect, Power and the Subject (English)
Jan Slaby
Comments
The seminar considers the political significance of affect: How is affect involved in constituting, modulating and governing subjects? It combines a broader affect theoretic framework in the tradition of Spinoza, Bergson and Deleuze with more recent work in the philosophy of mind and social philosophy that focuses on the situatedness of mental capacities and on the ways that social domains, practices and institutions shape – often reductively or in coercive and manipulating ways – the agentive and reflective capacities of individuals.
The seminar is research-oriented. It will discuss work conducted in the SFB Affective Societies. To get a feel for the topic, you may read Jan Slaby’s 2016 article “Mind Invasion” that can be found online (Frontiers in Psychology, open access). See www.janslaby.com for further texts and resources.
