Qualifikationsziele:
Die Studentinnen und Studenten sind mit dem aktuellen Wissenstand auf dem Gebiet des atmosphärischen Wasserkreislaufs vertraut und können die zu Grunde liegenden physikalischen Prozesse erklären. Außerdem sind sie in der Lage, den Einfluss des anthropogenen Klimawandels auf den Wasserkreislauf zu beschreiben und entsprechende Ergebnisse von Klimamodellen kritisch zu analysieren.

Inhalte:
Verschiedene Aspekte des atmosphärischen Wasserkreislaufs werden diskutiert:

– Quellen und Verteilung des atmosphärischen Wasserdampfs,

– Transport von Wasser in der Atmosphäre, z. B. in „atmospheric rivers“,

– Niederschlagsbildung,

– Wechselwirkung des Wasserdampfs mit der Dynamik synoptischer Wettersysteme (z. B. Einfluss von latentem Heizen auf die potentielle vorticity),

– Einfluss von Feuchteprozessen auf konvektive Systeme und deren Organisation (z. B. in tropischen Wirbelstürmen),

– stabile Wasserisotope als diagnostische Tracer des Wasserkreislaufs,

– Änderungen der Verdunstung, des atmosphärischen Wassergehalts und des Niederschlags in einem wärmeren Klima,

– Wechselwirkungen dieser Änderungen mit der atmosphärischen Dynamik.
