The seminar will address contemporary processes of globalization in relation to artistic practice and art historical methodology. We shall problematize Eurocentric frameworks of art history in relation to transcultural and postcolonial approaches, questioning not only linear models of writing the history of modernist art, but also the hierarchical relationship between centers and peripheries of cultural production. Is it possible, for instance, to construct a “world history of art” or envisage a “cosmopolitan” subject of art or must we, rather, think in terms of “hybridic identities” and “alternative modernities”? We shall not only consider the construction of artistic practice and cultural identities in the Global South from a post-colonial perspective, but also consider the consequences of diasporic and migratory movements on the formation of Western art. Furthermore, we shall reflect on the current call for a decolonization of Western cultural institutions. In preparation for this year's Berlin Graduate Symposium on Modern and Contemporary Art History (November 12/13), the seminar will provide joint discussions of thematically relevant authors (e.g. Frantz Fanon, Èduard Glissant, Monica Juneja, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, Rasheed Araeen, Walter D. Mignolo, Homi K. Bhabha, Kobena Mercer, Partha Mitter, Okwui Enwezor, Sudeep Dasgupta, Christian Kravagna and others). close
