WiSe 21/22: Global Microhistory in Ottoman Historiography

From the 1990s onwards, the interest in the connection between microhistory and global history has increased. Without overlooking the clear differences between them, histories/stories of individuals, events and places are more and more situated in a much larger history. This trend is referred to by some historians as “global microhistory”. This course will discuss the Italian historiographical tradition of microstoria with the global turn in historical studies, in order to explore a series of microhistorical and biographical works. The course will provide an overview of connections between micro and macro worlds in the late Ottoman Empire by focusing on lives of certain individuals and groups, personal narratives, and other ego documents. The main protagonists will be, on the one hand, extremely mobile people, who lived their lives on the move between empires and continents; and on the other hand, we will focus on those who lived and died in the same village and who described a world of their own in detail. The attempt is to frame the biographies and life stories of these individuals (microhistories) within the history of the late Ottoman Empire and beyond (global). close
