WiSe 21/22: Global Histories of Soccer

For many people, soccer is the most important thing in their lives. But as the recent attempt to build a European Super League against the wishes of fans shows, it is also a cold and calculating industry that routinely eschews romance and participation in favor of profit. In order to explain today’s ambivalences of soccer, we have to go back in time. Therefore, the seminar traces the development of the “English game” (as the recent Netflix production names it) from a 19th-century elite sport in England to a global event and product. We will look at the role of soccer during major events, processes, and turning points of 19th- and 20th-century history (wars, nationalism and regionalism, colonialism, economic crises, globalization, …). The seminar will not focus on individual games or a single club, but on the greater political, economic, cultural, and, not least, emotional implications of soccer in order to understand how and why soccer became such an important global commodity. Themes discussed in the seminar include the development of soccer tactics and rules, the recruitment of players, women’s soccer, the role of the fans, the media, and the national and international institutions, companies, and individual patrons involved in the soccer business.
