WiSe 21/22: The Politics of Global History: The Question of Primacy

In traditional historical narratives, the West is often the self-evident locus of processes associated with foundational categories of global modernity, such as globalization, empire-formation, the scientific revolution, capitalism, the Enlightenment, and development. Recent literature destabilizes these western-centric interpretations by situating regions often perceived as peripheral as the centers from where these aspects of modernity emerged. This seminar will introduce students to this rich, path-breaking historiographical tradition. We will read representative works, identify their contributions to global history, and discuss their methodological and theoretical underpinnings and implications. We will also problematize the ways in which this literature can perpetuate the very inherited categories and modes of analysis it seeks to challenge, and which are often embedded in intellectual, political, and institutional settings in the Global North. In other words, why is the question of primacy deemed so important in global history and what are the stakes of these interventions? The course will place a strong focus on readings about Latin America, but other regions will also be explored. close
