WiSe 21/22: The Holocaust in Berlin and Warsaw. Persecution, Murder, and Help in the Urban Space

Subject: Berlin and Warsaw were two central locations of the Holocaust. While in Berlin the Nazis planned the global murder of the Jews and attempted to transform the city into the most German and anti-Jewish place in the world, it was in Warsaw that they created Europe’s biggest ghetto, in which 100,000 Jews died before the first deportations to the Treblinka death camp in July 1942. In this seminar, we will study and compare how the Jews were persecuted and murdered in Berlin and Warsaw; who helped them, how and why; and how the local population reacted to their persecution. In studying the Holocaust in both cities, we will concentrate on the general frameworks for understanding the Holocaust, the plans of the perpetrators, the behaviour of the collaborators, and the fate of particular actors, especially survivors, through analysing their diaries, memoirs, and interviews. Program: In this seminar, we will read theoretical texts about the Holocaust and discuss the urban aspect of the genocide, while concentrating on persecution, murder, and help. We will also visit museums and memorial sides in Berlin. As in some cases we will meet before 12 o’clock, it may not be practical to select courses that take place between 10 and 12. Is this course suitable for you? This course is open to students from the Arts & Humanities, Cultural Studies, Social Sciences and Economics departments. In this course, you will be expected to be open to new perspectives, interested in reading texts relevant to the subject and discussing them with other students. Workload and Assessment: In order to obtain 5 ECTS credits, you will have to • attend the course regularly (at least 14 out of 16 sessions); • study the weekly course materials (an average of 15-35 pages of English-language text per week); • give a presentation alone or in a group (10-15 min) or submit a short essay (approx. 750 to 1,000 words); • pass the written examination (90 minutes). close
