WiSe 21/22: Analytical Marxism
Pedro Teixeira
Comments
In this course we will focus on the strand of Marxism which, since the late 1970's, subjected Marxist social and economic theory to a revision of its core elements. As the name suggests, these authors borrowed insights and methodologies from fields such as rational choice theory, and from the broader so-called analytic philosophical tradition. We will undertake a systematic reading and discussion of the attempts to revise the central elements of Marxism, namely the notion of class, the interpretation of historical materialism, and the transition towards socialism by authors such as G. A. Cohen, Jon Elster, John Roemer, Adam Przeworski and Erik O. Wright. We will also discuss how this variety of Marxism relates to other debates in political theory, namely those that deal with the question of property and with the notion of (distributive) justice." close
