This course is about a distinctive aspect of our mental lives — the fact that we imagine things: the taste of a good Vermouth, the sound of a pleasing melody, that there is no heaven, and so on. Imagining plays central roles in human life, offering each of us an enjoyable means of escaping the stresses of everyday life as well as helping us understand the world around us and our place within it. We will look at the various kinds of mental goings-on that are connected with the imagination, such as visualization, conception, supposition, pretence and make-belief. We will examine both the contrasts between different ways of imagining something and also the differences between imaginings and other mental events, such as beliefs, desires, and perceptions. Additionally, we will look at the roles that the imagination has been thought to play with respect to phenomena such as memory, empathy, art, fiction, and thought experimentation. As such, the readings for the course will be drawn not only from the contemporary literature in the philosophy of mind and cognition, but also from contemporary work in epistemology and aesthetics. close
