WiSe 21/22: Measuring Media Use
Roland Toth
Comments
Media use plays an important role in communication studies, as it is almost always under investigation – be it as an independent (media effects research), dependent (media use research), or moderating/ mediating variable. Especially since the use of mobile media has drastically increased to the point where the smartphone is the most important communication hub for most of us, it is necessary to reflect on the best ways to measure this phenomenon that, for many of us, occurs on a daily and regular basis.
In this seminar, we will retrace methodological advances in measuring media use in communication studies and other social sciences. We will discuss ideas, problems and caveats with popular measures and critically asses possible improvements with a focus on the perpetual relevance of mobile media.
Due to the necessity of discussions in this seminar, it will take place on-site at the university and there will be no possiblity to participate online. Further information will be provided on Blackboard after admission. close
